So who exactly is Sukie McClaren?

A Christmas-loving Cat lover? A Sound of Music Fanatic? A Fiercely Independent Woman?

She is all of the above. And when she is sent to Salzburg for a business trip a few weeks before Christmas, she thinks all her dreams have come true. As she packs her suitcase, the only things on her mind are Christmas markets, lots of snow and finally seeing the Doh-Ray-Me steps. Becoming the new best friend of the world’s hottest rock-star doesn’t even get a look in.

Pete Wallace is a reclusive, reluctant, rock-star and the world’s Number One, best-selling, male solo artist. It’s been three years since his last tour and he’s now preparing to go back on the road again. A week in Salzburg, schmoozing with the music press, is one of his worst nightmares.

He can’t wait for it to be over.

When Pete and Sukie meet, it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Lonely for too long, he begins to remember how it feels to be happy and, for the first time in six years, Christmas feels special again.

Eduardo di Santo however, whose kid sister suffered life-changing injuries at a Pete Wallace concert, is all set on getting revenge. When Pete’s new tour is announced, he begins to make his plans. Plans that will culminate in Pete’s demise.

Will Pete and Sukie’s new friendship die before it has a chance to flourish?

A Christmas tale full of love, laughter, friendship and revenge.

A Rock n Roll Lovestyle Horiz

My Review

Well, what a combination!

A thirty-something cat lover who has given up on men, and has a strange obsession with the Sound of Music, and a famous Rock n Roll star trying to make his name as a serious musician, who has people (especially women) eating out of the palm of his hand!

Actually, it is the different personalities which make this such a riveting read.

Suki has a heart of gold but a feisty character and she isn’t afraid to say what she thinks. So when she meets famous musician Pete at a hotel in Salzburg things don’t get off to a brilliant start. Suki isn’t impressed with fame and money, she doesn’t hang off Pete’s every word, she sees him as a normal person, with feelings, and she quickly sees through the tough Rock Star exterior.

Pete has become tired of the celebrity life, with no privacy and a pack of press behind him at every turn. He loves music and wants to be seen for his musical ability, not  for the size of his bank balance. He also has tragedy in his past, the details of which he is trying to deal with, and an enemy intent on revenge! He is fascinated with Suki, one of the only people who take the time to get to know the person behind the pop star, who talks to him honestly and has his best interests at heart.

So what an interesting and refreshing change this is. Don’t expect a sugar-coated Christmas romance, this one packs a punch!

In her debut novel, Kiltie Jackson has produced an absolute gem. She has a wonderful way of making characters leap off the page and into your hearts. My one worry at the start of the book was that there were too many characters, but as the pages progress they all fit into the story beautifully.

Attention to detail is also the key when it comes to describing the beautiful location of Salzburg, Austria. You can actually feel the sub-zero temperatures and taste the delicious hot chocolate, whilst admiring the breathtaking scenery.

Interesting subplots and side characters weave there way through the story. I loved Suki’s mum, devoted to her daughter, and single for many years, will she find a partner or is she destined to be alone?

Kiltie has packed this novel with fun, drama, friendships, and suspense. I can’t wait for the next one and don’t think we will be disappointed.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

About Kiltie Jackson

Kiltie grew up in Scotland, Glasgow to be precise. A very unique city with a very unique way of looking at life. When she was old enough to do so, she moved to London and then, after several years of obtaining interesting experiences -which are finding their way into her writing – she moved up to the Midlands.

She currently lives in Staffordshire with five cats and one husband. The cats kindly allow her and her husband to share their house on the condition they keeps paying the mortgage!

Her little home is known as Moggy Towers, even though despite having plenty of moggies, there are no towers!

She loves reading, watching movies, and visiting old castles. She really dislikes going to the gym!

Her biggest desire is that one day she can give up the day job and write her stories for a living.

Kiltie first began writing ‘A Rock ‘n’ Roll Lovestyle’ over ten years ago. The project was shelved on Chapter Seventeen as she felt the story wasn’t flowing as she would like it to.

In her own words “The images in my head would not come out of my fingers!” Fast forward to November 2016 when, having finished reading Lizzie’s Christmas Escape by Christie Barlow, she read more about the author and was inspired with how Christie herself came to be a best-selling author.

In that thunderbolt moment, Kiltie knew – with a deep certainty- that she needed to reacquaint herself with ‘A Rock ‘n’ Roll Lovestyle’ and begin writing again. She did this in January 2017 and found the words flowed faster than she could type them. Finally, the time was right for her to write her novel.

Her determination to finish what she had started all those years ago was absolute and the first draft was completed on Sunday 16th April 2017.

Since beginning to write again, the ideas have not stopped flowing. She has begun typing up her second book, ‘Of All the Unlikely Places’, and book three (not yet titled) has been worked out and is waiting in the wings for its turn in the spotlight.

She currently has a further ten plots and ideas stored in her file (it’s costing a fortune in USB drives as each story has its own memory stick!) and the ideas still keep on coming.

She now lives her life around the following three quotes:
“I love having weird dreams, they’re great fodder for book plots!”
“Why wait for your ship to come in when you can swim out to meet it?”
“Old enough to know better, young enough not to care!”

Winter Jumpers for Dogs

Winter Jumpers for Dogs

It’s been really cold here in the UK and Darcy has been shivering. I found him his cute jumper which says ‘I Can’t Stay Calm I’m A Dachshund’ but he decided that he wasn’t going to wear it this year! To be honest, it was a little tight, he’s obviously put on a few pounds since we rescued him in June 2015. I thought we could take a look at some winter jumpers for dogs, here are my dogs looking cosy.

My friend uses up her wool oddments to make warm jumpers for the dogs, Every foster dog has left here with his very own handknitted jumper and crocheted blanket. I like to think that it helps them remember the time that they spent with me.

I have mixed feelings about dressing dogs in clothes. Obviously, if the dog feels the cold it is a necessity. Winter walks are more enjoyable if the dog is wrapped up against the elements, but at the end of the day, they are animals with fur to keep them warm.

Raincoat from Amazon

Older dogs benefit from a waterproof coat when they go out for walks. Arthritic joints especially need to be kept warm and dry.

Thundershirt from Amazon

Darcy has a Thundershirt that he wears anytime he is anxious. I find this easier to put on than a jumper because there are four velcro fasteners and you can adjust how tight the coat fits. The idea is that a tightly fitted coat will make the dog feel secure and reduce anxiety levels. It helps on walks if the dog is anxious about noise from road traffic and keeps them warm too.

Pumpkin outfit from Amazon

Snowman outfit from Amazon

There are some super cute winter jumpers for dogs available. Some dogs love to dress up and show off. Alfie always came to me when he saw his Christmas jumper, even though he had a thick coat of fur! Darcy (the mini dachshund) seems to think that wearing clothes is for small dogs!… and that’s fine by me.

What sort of coat do you like to use for your dog and do they like wearing it?

A Shangri-La Christmas by Elizabeth Player

A Shangri-La Christmas

 Elizabeth Player

Beth was looking forward to spending Christmas in Scotland with her family. With just a few weeks to go she couldn’t wait. Arriving home one wet evening she was thrown into a state of panic when she flicked on her answer machine. Her mum had been taken into hospital after a fall. Beth packed a bag and jumped on the night train to Penzance. Beth’s mum is a leading light at the local church and she asks Beth to take a look in the ‘pink folder’ to check out what she might be able to do to help out. Beth is not keen and would prefer not to get involved but with a bit of persuassion she agrees.

Singing in the choir, baking cakes, helping at the Bazzar are just a few of the activities and Beth feels a bit put on… that is until she meets Stuart, new Vicar at St Piran’s. Beth can see how he’s set hearts a fluttering amongst the local ladies of the parish and she can’t help but fall a little under his spell herself.

But, she’s cautious. She’s barely out of a relationship with an equally handsome man in the city, who just wasn’t ready for any type of ‘committment.’ This drop dead gorgeous cleric seems just a bit too good to be true; but there’s something about him!

My Review of A Shangri-La Christmas

When Beth has a call to say that her mum is in hospital she drops everything and catches the next train to Cornwall.  She finds her mum needs a knee operation, but she is in good spirits and asks Beth to stand in for her at all the church activities she had planned in the run-up to Christmas.

Beth dutifully agrees and her kindness leads her to Stuart, the new vicar. The female parishioners visibly swoon at the sight of Stuart and he has them eating out of the palm of his hand. Is the handsome vicar attracted to Beth, or just being his normal charming self?

A well-written romance that highlights the spirit of Christmas. You will never be able to look at your vicar in quite the same way again!

The Marriage Pact

My Review

When I first started reading this book I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. It seemed to me too far-fetched and unbelievable that two professional people like Jake and Alice could get caught up in ‘The Marriage Pact’. Alice, a lawyer, actually signed a contract to be part of this strange marriage cult and Jake. who worked as a marriage therapist, was also easily swayed to sign on the dotted line.

However, I have to say that I got completely hooked and after the first couple of chapters frantic head scratching, I have to say I didn’t care that the plot was, well, …strange….I  loved it!

Jake narrates the story but he did tend to go off on a tangent sometimes, and I found myself desperately wanting him to get back to the plot so I could find out what happens next.

There were times when this book sent cold shivers down my spine and the writing is fluent and compelling.

If you like your books true to life, this might not be for you. If you can get past that, you will find an intensely thought-provoking story about what is required to make a happy marriage.

I found it genuinely hard to put down, it is unique and memorable.

Dog Breeds Good With Children , Best Family Dogs

 Dog Breeds Good With Children

There’s no such thing as the perfect family dog. They all have strong jaws, sharp teeth and can react unexpectedly in strange situations.

A dog lives for an average of twelve years, a huge commitment and a massive part of a childhood. So the breed has to be the right one for your family.

Here are some family photographs.

My daughter and nephew with family dogs.

It is always a good thing to look at a dogs genetics first to see which are most likely to fit in with an active family. Secondly, a dog who is easy to train likes to play and enjoys an energetic lifestyle.

What you need in a family dog?

A family dog needs to be gentle enough to be around children but able to cope with children who are occasionally loud and boisterous. The perfect family dog is a calm dog who takes life in their stride. They also need to be obedient, respectful, loyal and kind.

5 Border Collie

What children can learn from a family dog.

Good Manners

Training the Child

Before introducing a child to a new dog or puppy some ground rules must be observed. The child has to understand that some things are not acceptable, like poking, prodding, getting into the dogs face and not encroaching on a dog’s personal space ie his bed. Also that no matter how friendly their own dog is, to not approach strange dogs.

Adopting a Rescue Dog When You Have Children

My childhood was enriched by the company of a Jack Russell who needed a home when I was around five. Jack Russell’s can be snappy but this one had been well trained and we knew the people who had owned her before.

Any dog rescue will tell you that one of the main reasons for people handing in their dogs is because they have expanded their family. If proper training is put into practice with the dog and the child many rescue handovers can be avoided and the child and dog can grow up learning and playing together.

A good dog rescue will put the dog into foster for assessment before he/she is available for rehoming. The dog can then be tested around children and prospective adopters know what to expect. If you are thinking of adopting, make sure that the dog and children meet beforehand to see if they are a good match.

No dog should ever be left unsupervised in the company of children.

A Pearl for my Mistress by Annabel Fielding

A Pearl for My Mistress

 Annabel Fielding

A story of class, scandal and forbidden passions in the shadow of war. Perfect for fans of Iona Grey, Gill Paul and Downtown Abbey.

England, 1934. Hester Blake, an ambitious girl from an industrial Northern town, finds a job as a lady’s maid in a small aristocratic household.

Despite their impressive title and glorious past, the Fitzmartins are crumbling under the pressures of the new century. And in the cold isolation of these new surroundings, Hester ends up hopelessly besotted with her young mistress, Lady Lucy.

My Review

Hester Blake travels to Hebden Hall to take up the position of a maid to Lady Lucy Fitzmartin. It is her first job in service and she arrives excited but slightly hesitant as to what lays ahead.

She is relieved when her new employer greets her with a friendly smile, and they soon bond as they share a love of literature. Although there is a very clear class divide, both girls are ambitious and hungry for knowledge of world affairs, politics and historical events.

All is not what it seems at Hebdon Hall. The years of decadence are well and truly over, but the Fitzmartins go to great lengths to keep their lack of finances hidden.  Rooms are dimly lit and cold, bed linen is repaired and towels darned, by a greatly diminished number of household staff. As well as the humiliation of their lack of funds, the family ‘s main fear is that a scandal will break out, destroying the ancestral reputation and bringing shame on the family.

Lucy tries to be the dutiful debutante her parents aspire her to be but she feels trapped in this world and she struggles to keep her opinions unspoken.

When the girl’s feelings for each other start to deepen they are forced to keep their relationship hidden.

An extremely well-researched novel laced with mystery, scandal, and intrigue. The book is not just about social class divides which are so often recorded, but also about classes coming together, loyalty and the keeping of secrets. A hugely interesting and entertaining read.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Princess Margaret by Theo Aronson, Biography

Princess Margaret

 Theo Aronson

My Review

I’ve always been fascinated by Princess Margaret and this book didn’t let me down.
As a young woman, she was undoubtedly stunningly beautiful and had the love life that unfortunately follows great beauty. In complete contrast to Queen Elizabeth, her sister, life was a long roller coaster and she was everything her sister was not.
I enjoyed reading about the hypocrisy she showed to Princess Diana and the Duchess of York whom she believed to have brought shame on to the royal family!
I would have liked to read about the more controversial side of her life and an update to include the details of her death would be a great addition. The book references the Princess’ failing health in the concluding chapters and it leaves the reader wondering exactly how and where she died.
An informative, balanced and fair biography written by Theo Aronson, about one of the most controversial royals ever. His insights are partially personal or from sources linked very close to the princess and can be relied upon completely.,

How Do I Become A Better Dog Owner?

How Do I Become A Better Dog Owner?

We all love our dogs, however, there are always little adjustments that we can add to the way that we care for them. Just a small tweak can bring on fantastic results and you will see huge benefits to your dog’s health. To be the best and most responsible dog owner is really, really easy.

Amazing Simple Dog Hacks

Do you want to know how?

It doesn’t matter if you are a first-time dog owner or you have taken care of dogs all your life, there is always something that you can do to make him happier and healthier.

These tips are designed to give maximum benefits by making small adjustments. I’m sure that you do some of them already, but there really is something for everyone.

This handy checklist is a guide to improve your dog’s life, step by step.

After all, our dogs are our best friends, so they deserve to have, the very best owner.

  1.  How is your dog’s diet?

To get the best from your dog it is important to give a healthy balanced diet. However, by adding a little ingredient, your dog will be in tip-top condition.

My Number One Diet Tip For Dogs.

The best tip I ever discovered was to give your dog green beans instead of treats.

They can be raw, cooked or even frozen. My dogs love them and it has really helped me to cut down on the number of treats they have.

Just in case you were wondering:

 Best Dog Owner

There are forty calories in a medium-sized dog biscuit eg a gravy bone.

So doing a quick swap will have an immediate impact on your dog’s waistline.

Here is another way to help if your dog needs to lose weight.

Substitute some of the dog’s regular food with a couple of teaspoons of pureed pumpkin. It is low in calories and in addition, the fibre and water will make the dog feel full, so he won’t even know he’s on a diet!

Add coconut oil to the food.

There are so many benefits to adding just a half teaspoon of coconut oil to your dog’s food both internally and externally. For best results add very slowly and you will soon see fantastic results.

If you want to know about the benefits of coconut oil you can read all about it here.

Organic Coconut Oil- Best Dog Owner

Coconut Oil

Add some fish oil to their diet by occasionally adding sardines (my dogs favourite)  tuna or salmon.

Be the best dog owner ever and make healthy, tasty treats for your dog. Using just a few ingredients, great snacks can be made instead of shop-bought treats. There are hundreds of recipes online and they are all super quick and inexpensive. Your dog will love you for it!

My dogs love frozen dog treats in the summer to keep cool. I put some yoghurt in ice cube trays and add a blueberry before placing in the freezer. They are great if you are concerned about your dog overheating.

Keeping your dog’s weight under control is so important.

2.  Does your dog get enough exercise?

1 Next time you go for a walk, take a ball with you, the dog will cover more ground chasing after it.  Additionally,  you can get some recall training done at the same time.

2 Another easy thing to do is to change the route that you use every day to walk your dog.  Your dog will pick up different scents and get more sensory stimulation from a different area.

3 Walk with a friend who has a dog, this will make your dog more sociable and you will cover more miles having a good old gossip!

3.  Is your dog Insured?

Take out a policy or open a savings account for your dog’s care and add to it each week. It will give you the peace of mind to know that the help will be there if your dog needs it. All responsible dog owners have a plan in place if their dog is sick.

4.  Is your dog mentally stimulated?

Make your dog work for his food or treats by adding a food puzzle.

We are all aware that dogs can be destructive if they get bored. Their brains need lots of stimulation even when they are past the puppy stage. Just one or two interactive toys will really help to keep your dog’s mind active. As a result, the dog will be calmer and less anxious.

He will no longer need to chew your furniture!

This  Bob-a-lot interactive dog toy has kept my miniature dachshund amused for hours. I bought this two years ago and it is still in good working order.

Click here to watch a video from Amazon which demonstrates how to put treats in different sections of the toy. There are also adjustable openings so that you can choose a difficulty level. When your dog gets the hang of how to release the treats, simply make the openings a little smaller.

They also come in different sizes, the small one is perfect for my mini dachshund.

Available here on Amazon

Are you paying a fortune for tennis balls that get lost or destroyed in a few minutes?.

We purchased the Chuckit Dog Ball three years ago and it is still going strong. I love the bright colour which stands out in grass and the ridges make the ball easy for the dog to grasp in their mouth. These are brilliant for dogs who have boundless energy.

Dogs learn when they are having fun, so this is a great way to teach some training commands AND burn off some energy.

5. Keep microchip and dog tags up to date.

Every responsible dog owner has his dog chipped. In fact, in the UK, it is illegal not to.

However, dog owners forget to change the details on the chip when they move house or change telephone number. They buy their dog a lovely new collar and forget to swap the ID disc.

Keep the details up to date and attach a tag to all of your dog’s collars so that you can be contacted as soon as your dog is found.

Find out exactly what to do if your dog goes missing here.

6.  Grooming.

1 Brushing or combing will not only improve the dog’s appearance, but it will also give you the chance to get a close look to see if he has any skin irritations, fur loss, hot spots, sore paws, etc

2 Keep your dog’s nails short with specially designed dog clippers. If you struggle with this (like I do!) a vet or groomer will do them for a small charge. My dog causes an awful fuss when I take him to have his nails trimmed but the professionals are used to nervous dogs and can do them very quickly.

Walking your dog on hard surfaces is the best way to keep his nails filed down.

7.  Massage.

You don’t have to be an expert to massage your dog. Just gently stroking and running your hands over the dog’s muscles will make both of you feel bonded and relaxed. It also gives you a good chance to spot any lumps or bumps which may appear.

See how your dog relaxes if you gently massage just behind his ears?

Learn canine massage and really bond with your dog.

8.  Toys.

Be the best dog owner and buy good quality, durable dog toys that cannot be destroyed or chewed up.

Cheap dog toys break and could cause a blockage in the intestine.

Sometimes a small plush toy will give comfort to your dog. My dog likes to carry a small toy around, she even takes it to bed with her.

A simple ball will give hours of fun. Teach the dog to retrieve, so that you don’t have to do all the legwork!

Make Inexpensive Homemade Toys

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, get an unwashed T-shirt or old sock belonging to yourself and put knots in it until it resembles a ball. The dog will get comfort from the smell when you are not there.

A really cheap idea to stimulate play is to get an odd sock and stuff it with material that gives a crinkle effect (eg a crisp packet or biscuit wrapper) then tie a knot and use as a fetch toy.

Place three plastic cups in a line upside down. Place a treat inside one cup and see if your dog can guess which one it is. Slide the cups around to make the game more difficult.

Amazon Purchase Link

(There is a short video so that you can see how the toy works)

The reason I like the Wobble Wag Giggle Ball  is because there are special clutch holes which allow the dog to get a good grasp of the ball.  Dogs are entertained by the ‘giggling’ sounds and  benefit from lots more exercise when they run to fetch the ball. Use both indoors and outdoors, great for those wintry days when you are stuck inside.

9 Teeth

Check your dog’s teeth and gums regularly and brush with some special doggy toothpaste every day. The best way for a dog owner to do this is to start when the dog is a puppy.dachshund - Best Dog Owner

If you can’t brush your dog’s teeth?

Don’t worry, there are always things that you can do. My rescue dog would never allow me to put something in his mouth so I found the best possible alternative.

Make sure that your dog’s teeth are in the best condition by giving him a daily dental chew. Mine love fish skin cubes. The smell of fish is very strong so I keep mine in an airtight container.

They are 100% natural so no nasty additives.

Greenies make an excellent range of doggy dental chews which are all natural and veterinary approved. Make sure that you choose the right size for your dog.

I always sprinkle a tiny amount of Plaque Off on my dog’s food. I have found that not only does it remove plaque but it IMPROVES BREATH which has been so helpful. I don’t want to put my elderly dog through a dental operation and this keeps her breath smelling fresh.

Plaque Off is very economical because a little goes a long way, so a small pot lasts for ages.

Plaque Off Advert Best Dog Owner

Plaque Off Dental Bites

Coconut oil will also help with dental hygiene. In addition, it is natural and helps give a beautiful shiny coat too.

Give your dog a small piece of carrot or apple to munch on. This will remove plaque, clean teeth and improve smelly breath.

Find out why dental health is so important here.

10.  Observe.

To be the best dog owner you need to always observe your dog. Just like a child, we need to keep a watchful eye on our pets.

Look for anything out of the ordinary.

Trust your instincts and you will find:

That you are always right!

Check that the dog is eating, drinking, urinating, emptying bowels and playing as normal.

Detecting early signs that your dog is unwell can prevent serious illness and costly vet bills.

Be The Best

Be the Best Dog Owner By Keeping A

Natural Dog Medicine Cabinet

Sometimes we don’t need to look further than our kitchen cupboards to find natural remedies for everyday dog ailments. These items are readily available in shops and can be purchased at very little expense.

(Of course, if the dog is unwell or in pain he must be seen by a vet immediately.)

1 Keep some tinned pumpkin in the cupboard to help with your dog’s digestion.

2 Epsom Salts in a warm bath help muscle aches and sprains.

3 Vitamin E cream helps with dry, sore, or swollen paws.

4 Diluted Apple Cider Vinegar can be used to clean ears.

5 Chamomile Tea poured over the dog’s skin can reduce itchiness.

6 Warmed salt can be placed in a sock and placed on an arthritic joint to relieve pain.

Live yoghurt will soothe a dog’s upset tummy.

8 Pumpkin seeds are a natural wormer.

Coconut Oil can help the fur to grow back if the dog has bald patches.

10 Pour warm water through a sachet of oatmeal, then rinse the dog’s coat to relieve itching.

By following these quick and easy tips you can be the best dog owner and your dog will benefit by being more happy and healthy. It only takes a few easy tweaks and the results can be seen very quickly.
