Carpet Cleaning Tips For Pet Owners

Dogs can indeed bring joy and companionship to our lives, but they can also contribute to increased household chores in various ways. In this post we feature carpet cleaning tips for pet owners to make life easier. We might not have all the answers, but after years of experience owning pets, we have gained some tips which may be useful.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Muddy paw prints suddenly showing up five minutes after you’ve just cleaned the floor.
  • A dog who prefers to urinate inside when it’s raining.
  • A vacuum cleaner that frequently clogs and spews out everything you’ve just spent half an hour vacuuming?
  • Guests being given a lint remover to rid their clothes of fur before leaving your house.
  • A male dog who likes to put down his scent on anything new brought into the house.

These are everyday problems when you have a pet, and I’ve experienced all of them, plus many more. I like to keep the home free of pet fur, remove stains effectively and keep the carpets smelling fresh – however it’s hard work!

Removing Pet Hair From Carpets And Furniture

Dogs shed fur year-round, but the extent varies by breed, age, and season.

Most dogs have heavier shedding in spring (losing winter coat) and fall (growing a thicker coat for winter).

Breeds and coat types influence shedding, with double-coated breeds shedding more.

Puppies may shed when transitioning from puppy to adult coat.

Hormonal changes and indoor/outdoor living can also affect shedding.

When your dog is in moult its helpful to take your dog outside in the morning and give him a really good groom. This helps to reduce the amount of fur that will accumulate inside the house and cut down on cleaning.

I love these grooming gloves for dogs who don’t enjoy being brushed. The relaxing motion of running your hands over your dog or cat makes the pet feel like he is being gently stroked. These gloves are great for getting into awkward areas on the animal , like under the tail , face and armpits. They can also be used on furniture, inside the car and pet blankets.

What Do You Need From A Good Pet Vacuum Cleaner?

Durable

Strong suction and powerful filtration.

Multi-purpose i.e. A selection of tools designed to remove pet fur and a handheld function for quick fixes.

Suitable For hard floors and carpets

Flexible enough to get into hard to reach corners.

Easy to clean, replace filters and empty.

Personally, I also choose to use a lightweight vacuum cleaner due to spinal problems. Sometimes the cleaner is used twice a day so it is essential that it is small enough to store in a compact area where it is accessible at all times. I want to be able to switch from upright to handheld quickly and good battery length is important.

Best Fur Busting Gadgets

My top tip is to use a Squeegee that you would normally use on windows or shower screens on small areas of carpet, before vacuuming. I have a metal, heavy duty squeegee which lifts  the pile and loosens stubborn fur build up.  Use on small areas like stairs, rugs, doormats etc. then vacuum clean as normal.

Baking Soda To Eliminate Odours It’s a fantastic, budget-friendly solution that I swear by. When there’s an accidental spill or if I just want to eliminate odours, I generously sprinkle baking soda over the carpet, let it work its magic for about 15-20 minutes, and then vacuum it up. The transformation is always remarkable, and my home feels so much cleaner and inviting. It’s become one of my go-to tricks for maintaining a clean and cozy living space.

Vinegar for Cleaning: Vinegar is my secret weapon for carpet cleaning. I mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, and it’s my go-to solution for tackling tough stains and odours. Whether it’s pet accidents or spilled red wine, a few spritzes of this mixture followed by a blot with a clean cloth works wonders. The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries, leaving my carpets refreshed and spotless. It’s a reliable and budget-friendly choice for keeping my home clean and odor-free.

Homemade Air Fresheners: Make your own natural air fresheners by simmering a pot of water with citrus peels, cinnamon sticks, or herbs. This can help combat pet odors without relying on synthetic air fresheners.
