A Garden in Cornwall Review

The main characters Matt and Julianne are anticipating a new arrival but are dismayed to hear that their rented cottage is to be sold. Matt is pursuing his dream career as a landscape gardener. His first challenge is to restore the mysterious secret gardens at nearby Penwill Hall. Julianne is determined to discover the truth behind the forgotten garden so that Matt can plan an authentic restoration. She goes out of her way to find a link to the gardens and uncover its former beauty.

Back at Cliff’s House, a new housekeeper, Mrs. Norbit has arrived. She is determined to whip Cliff House and everyone in it into shape. I loved how everyone was secretly scared of her, (including the owners) and giggled at her colour coded cleaning sponges!

Would we get to see a softer side of the new housekeeper? Will Matt and Julianne find a new home before the baby is born? Are the secrets of the lost gardens uncovered?

I really enjoyed this book, characters rich in personality, history, mystery and a wheelbarrow full of love!

Description

Determined to help with the autumn village heritage fete for charity, Julianne joins the local quilting circle and discovers that her creative talents do not extend to needlepoint and patchwork. Worse still, her time is stretched too thin already by assisting Lady Amanda in organizing the event’s festivities. When Julianne encounters a feud between two villagers over the village’s ‘Old Cornish’ name, she wants to get involved. This incites a fierce argument between herself and Matt that leaves them both feeling distant and unhappy.

Fighting with Matthew is bad enough — but to make things worse, the village’s requested ‘celebrity host’ for the fete is  Petal Price-Parker. She arrives as gorgeous as ever, and with her marriage doomed to be nothing more than celebrity gossip. To Julianne’s dismay, Matt and Petal are thrown together by the local garden club’s role in the fete. It becomes obvious that Matt’s runway model ex still finds him attractive.

Is this the end for Julianne and Matt’s perfect romance? Will Matt’s feelings for Petal return? Will Julianne finish her pathetic patchwork quilt in time for the fete?

My Review

Another really enjoyable read and it didn’t matter that I read this book out of sequence. Julianne is struggling to make a patchwork quilt to raise funds for charity at the village fete. She is also helping Lady Amanda organise the tea tent and inadvertently finds herself involved in a local grudge between two villagers regarding the name of the village. A massive row breaks out between Matt and Julianne when she reveals that she made a rather hasty judgment about the disagreement. Julianne goes on to say she still feels like an outsider in the Cornish village despite her best efforts to fit in.

Things get even worse when Matt’s ex, a glamorous celebrity model arrives to attend the fete. Julianne feels jealous and distant from her husband, both are stubborn and unwilling to back down. I really felt for Julianne, she had completely immersed herself into village life but Matt’s words made her feel that she would never truly be regarded as a genuine local.

As a lover of Cornwall, I enjoyed hearing about the Cornish traditions and heritage. The references to patchwork crafting and horticulture were interesting and well researched. I desperately wanted Matt and Julianne to make up and couldn’t rest until I found out how things developed. This novella is centred around heritage, miscommunication, insecurities and of course…love!
