Most of us have Tumeric in our spice racks, after all, it is the spice which gives curry its distinctive yellow colour, but did you know about the amazing magical powers of turmeric?

It has been used widely in India for thousands of years for the following conditions

Turmeric has been studied as a cancer inhibitor and early studies suggest that it helps to prevent cancerous cells in the colon, prostate, and lungs. Indian populations have some of the lowest cancer rates in these organs. However, the study is not definitive.

The magic ingredient is known as curcumin and it is said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Dissolve 2 grams of turmeric powder in a cup of boiling water, add lemon, honey, and ginger for improved flavour.

(It can be used in milk the same way)

Use to add flavour to main dishes.

Add to soups, salad dressings, and stir-fries.

Look for curcumin supplements that contain black pepper.Tinctures and tablets can be purchased from health shops

You can also use turmeric topically.

To help your body absorb the curcumin from turmeric add black pepper and coconut oil.


Taking turmeric in large quantities can cause side effects and must be avoided by people taking anticoagulant medicine.

Don’t take medicinally when pregnant or if you have diabetes.

Just to finish, turmeric stains everything bright yellow so use with caution!

  1. I take a turmeric supplement to help my stomach, and it seems to help calm the symptoms. It feels like it’s an anti-inflammatory as my tummy can begin to play up again if I run out of the supplement.

    I don’t think the one I use has black pepper in it, but I always have it at teatime, and I add loads of black pepper to my food anyway. I love black pepper. Can never have too much pepper 😊
